Some people are good at sports while others are good at matching things.  Some people may be good at both. Others may be terrible at both.  The point is, at some point you may come to a crossroads of which shirt looks the best with which tie and have no idea how to choose.

There are a few simple rules to follow that can help even the most fashion distraught look pretty decent when it’s time to suit up.

 

First off, get rid of the brightly colored, floral ties that your dad bought for you.

No matter how “groovy” he told you they were back in the day, it’s obviously not working any more. Try darker colored ties.  Ties that are darker in color tend to match with a wider variety of shirts so they can also save you money by matching 3 different shirts instead of just one.  A pretty basic but great looking combination comes from matching a mild to medium shirt with the same colored tie, only dark.  For example, light to medium blue shirts look great with navy blue ties.  Dark grey shirts go well with black ties.  You get the idea.

 If you don’t like the solid tie look or want to mix it up a bit, there are options.  

Striped ties have always stayed in style.  Their sleek look paired with the right shirt is just the thing to get you noticed.   A rule for these is simple as well.  Just make sure that one of the colors in the tie matches the shirt.

Now obviously a pink and purple striped tie with some black in it probably isn’t going to look great with your dark grey shirt.  However, by keeping it classy and pairing, for example, a blue and green striped tie with a blue shirt, you will look unique, yet sophisticated.  Remember, you don’t want to look like you’re going to junior prom at an inner-city High School, you’re a grown up now so it’s time to dress like one.
